The Universidad del Mayab, located in Mérida, Yucatan, Mexico, is the ideal setting for international students to immerse themselves in the Spanish language and Mexican culture. The University is located about ten miles from the center of Mérida, the capital of Yucatan and the most important city in the Mexican southeast. It has the distinction of being the first city on the American continent to have been named Cultural Capital by an international committee, a distinction which was celebrated with innumerable cultural events throughout the year 2000. Mérida is also a leader in Healthcare. Its specialized hospitals and clinics are known for their state-of-the-art installations and modern, comfortable facilities. It is the hub of a thriving manufacturing industry which exports goods to various parts of the world.

Mérida is the perfect starting point for exploring Mayan civilization, one of the most complex and sophisticated of the ancient world. Within walking distance from the University are the ruins of Dzibilchaltún which, archaeologists say, was one of the largest continually inhabited cities of pre-colonial America. Less than two hours from Mérida, the tall pyramids of Chichen Itzá, one of the most spectacular Mayan centers, rise in the midst of a vast plain surrounded by jungle and forest. A short drive takes one to the beautiful beaches on the Gulf of México. Four hours from Mérida are Cancún and the Mayan Riviera, two of Mexico’s most treasured tourist destinations.
